WHAT I OFFER
Tailored tuition – lessons are tailored to meet your ability, needs, tastes and aspirations.
Tuition to all ages and abilities – I am happy to take on complete beginners with no previous experience, right through to more advanced players. Younger children are also welcome, providing their hands are big enough!
Playing for exams or playing for fun – Working through the piano grades is a tried and tested method of building up your skills and knowledge. By taking grade exams you also get acknowledgement of your progress in the form of an exam certificate. This tradition is very popular but not for everyone, so if you would prefer to play just for the joy of it, this is also perfectly fine.
The right approach for you – Some people are more suited to the traditional approach of reading music, whilst others may prefer to play ‘by ear’ or concentrate on improvisation. I offer tuition that is the right approach for you, whether it be focused on jazz improvisation, learning classical repertoire, expanding harmonic knowledge, learning your favourite Beatles song, or anything in between. It’s useful to note that ABRSM (the most established of the music exam boards) offers jazz piano grade exams, so if you wanted to take piano grades (but concentrate on jazz and improvisation) you still can.
Lessons are taught at my house in Shrewsbury, Shropshire (SY2) – I have a well-maintained acoustic piano.
Help with technique, sight reading, aural skills, theory and confidence – There are many different skills that are required as a performer, some of which may come more naturally than others. Whichever areas you need to concentrate on I have the necessary experience and resources to help you.
DBS Checked – Renewed September 2024.
I have taught at many schools over the past 20 years including: Wrekin College, Newport Girls’ High School, Wolverhampton Grammar School and Kings Norton Girls’ School.
Central to my teaching I believe that the learning of any musical instrument should be, above all, enjoyable!

ONLINE LESSONS
Tuition is available online via Zoom, Skype or FaceTime or your preferred service.
What do I need for online lessons?
Pupils require the minimum of a phone, tablet or computer equipped with a microphone (and ideally a camera), as well as a good connection to the internet. Lessons can be audio-only or audio-visual.
For a more interactive experience, a laptop or computer and an external webcam is ideal. With this setup, the pupil and teacher are able to see each other’s hands.
